How curing works

Light-cured dental resin stays soft until a curing lamp triggers it to harden, which is why a practitioner can position a gem precisely and only then “lock” it in place. The reaction depends on the light energy delivered, so a brighter lamp cures the same resin faster. The timer uses a reference of about twenty seconds per coat at 1000 mW/cm² and scales from there.

Self-cure resin skips the light entirely: two components react and set on a fixed clock, which takes longer but does not need a lamp. Either way, the resin is properly hard within minutes — the longer “wait before eating” figure is about protecting a fresh bond, not about the resin still being liquid.
