The three inputs that build the score
The calculator starts from a base visibility number for each of the four teeth it covers — central incisor, lateral incisor, canine, and premolar — reflecting how prominently each one sits in a typical smile: 85 for the central incisor, 95 for the lateral incisor, 90 for the canine, and 55 for the premolar. From there it adds an arch adjustment (0 for the upper arch, a steep −35 for the lower arch) and a height adjustment based on where on the tooth’s face the gem sits (−12 near the gumline, 0 in the centre, +6 near the biting edge). The three numbers are simply added together and clamped between 0 and 100, and that total is the visibility score.
A worked example: the classic spot
Take the single most common placement people ask about: an upper lateral incisor, centred on the tooth’s face. That is 95 (lateral incisor base) + 0 (upper arch) + 0 (center height) = 95, which the calculator labels “bold” and confirms sits inside the smile line. Move the same gem toward the biting edge instead of the centre — a small, deliberate change — and the height adjustment of +6 pushes the total to 101, which clamps at the calculator’s ceiling of 100. That clamp is not a rounding artefact; it is the one combination among the four teeth, two arches, and three heights the tool covers where the raw arithmetic would actually exceed the scale, and capping it at 100 is the correct, intended behaviour rather than a bug.
The single biggest lever: which arch
Nothing else in the calculator moves the score as much as switching from the upper arch to the lower arch. A canine centred in the upper arch scores 90; the identical tooth, height, and gem in the lower arch scores 55 — a flat 35-point drop, entirely from the arch adjustment. The reasoning matches ordinary experience: upper front teeth show far more readily in a natural smile and in conversation than the lower ones, which stay comparatively hidden behind the lower lip much of the time. If a subtle, mostly-private gem is actually the goal, moving to the lower arch does more work toward that than any other single choice available in the calculator.
Height on the tooth: a smaller, still real, adjustment
Where on the tooth’s face the gem sits matters too, just on a smaller scale than arch does. A gumline placement pulls the score down by 12 points relative to a centred one, while an edge placement adds 6. On an upper central incisor, that is the difference between 73 (gumline, “balanced”), 85 (centre, “bold”), and 91 (edge, “bold”) — three genuinely different-feeling placements on the exact same tooth, without changing the tooth or the arch at all. This is a useful lever for toning a naturally prominent tooth down slightly, or pushing a quieter one a little more into view, without switching teeth entirely.
Where the categories land
The calculator groups scores into three bands: 80 and above reads as “bold,” 55 up to 80 reads as “balanced,” and anything under 55 reads as “discreet.” Separately, “in the smile line” is a simpler yes/no cutoff at a score of 60 or above. These two labels can diverge in an informative way: a lower-arch lateral incisor centred on the tooth scores 60 — “balanced” and just barely inside the smile line — which is a genuinely different situation from a lower premolar near the gumline, which scores 8, solidly “discreet” and nowhere near the smile line by either measure.
Where the score never actually reaches zero
Because the calculator clamps its output to a 0–100 range, it is reasonable to wonder whether any combination actually hits the floor. Across the four teeth, two arches, and three heights the calculator covers, the lowest real combination — a lower premolar near the gumline — comes out to 55 − 35 − 12 = 8, not 0. The clamp exists as a defensive guard in the code rather than something any of these specific combinations actually triggers on the low end, which is a useful thing to know if you are trying to find the single most discreet spot the calculator can describe: 8 is effectively the practical floor, not 0.
Why the four teeth start from different base scores
The base scores are not arbitrary popularity rankings — they roughly track how much of each tooth is actually visible during a natural smile and in ordinary speech. The lateral incisor, sitting right beside the two front teeth, gets the highest base score of the four at 95, largely because it shows fully in most smiles without being so central that it dominates the whole look the way a central incisor gem can. The central incisor itself, at 85, is the most visually dominant single tooth but slightly lower here because a gem placed dead centre in the smile reads as bolder and more attention-grabbing than one a step to the side, a distinction the calculator’s labels — both land as “bold,” just at different scores — capture more precisely than a simple ranking would. The canine, at 90, shows prominently and catches the light at a slight angle during a smile, especially with any edge adjustment. The premolar, at 55, sits further back in the mouth and is the only one of the four whose base score alone lands in “balanced” territory before any arch or height adjustment is applied at all.
Planning multiple gems with varied placement

Placement and size are calculated independently — the score above says nothing about how big the gem is, only where it sits and how visible that spot is. What the score does not capture
Visibility is a purely visual measure — it says nothing about whether a given spot is a sound place to bond a gem in the first place. A biting-edge placement scores well for visibility precisely because it catches the light and the eye, but that same spot takes more direct mechanical force when you bite and chew than a centred placement does, which is a durability question rather than a visibility one. Similarly, a gumline placement scores lower for visibility but can be harder to keep clean day to day, which is a hygiene question the score does not weigh in on at all.
